Ashok Kumar was born in 1965 in a middle class family. His father, Radhey Shyam Bhagat was a doctor as well as the member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a socio-cultural organisation devoted to the development and regeneration of India. His hometown is Narayani, a small village in godda district.Ashok Kumar's first brush with politics occurred in 2000. He became M.L.A from Mahagama constituency from (2000-2005) , (2005-2009) and (2014-present).
He was Jharkhand B.J.P Vice President in 2012 and B.J.P General Secretary in 2013
